Coahoma Football Falls to Mississippi Gulf Coast in Season Opener

PERKINSTON, Miss. — Coahoma Community College’s football team fell 27-21 to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the season opener Thursday night at A.L. May Memorial Stadium. The Tigers amassed 459 yards of total offense but could not overcome a second-half scoring run by the Bulldogs.

Coahoma struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Jacob Clopton connected with Jaden Moses for a 62-yard touchdown. Mississippi Gulf Coast responded immediately with a 69-yard rushing touchdown by Elijah Jones-Crosby to tie the game at 7-7. The Bulldogs took the lead in the third quarter with a 44-yard passing touchdown and a 38-yard touchdown run.

Clopton narrowed the deficit to 21-14 in the fourth quarter with a one-yard quarterback keeper. After Jones-Crosby broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run, Clopton found Demarcus Brown for a 39-yard touchdown pass as time expired, sealing the Bulldogs’ win.

Clopton led the Tigers’ offense, completing 20 of 29 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 17 times for 69 yards and a touchdown. Prentavis Madison led the rushing attack with 82 yards on 17 carries, while Abraylen Jenkins was the top receiver with five catches for 74 yards.

Defensively, Ardavius Harris recorded nine tackles, including five solo stops. Jakylen Patton added six tackles and, along with Dacaris Brown, contributed to a quarterback sack. The Tigers will host Jones College in their home opener Thursday at James E. Miller Stadium.
