Cascade Sweeps Utah Talons in Historic Softball Series
STARKVILLE — The Portland Cascade achieved a historic feat Monday night, sweeping the Utah Talons, the reigning league champions, in a series that marked a first in AUSL history. Sierra Sacco-Ferrie drove in the game-winning run with an RBI triple, helping the Cascade secure a 3-2 victory in the series finale.
The win moved Portland into second place in the league standings with a 4-2 record, just half a game behind the Carolina Blaze. Sacco-Ferrie has reached base in all but one game this season, though she has yet to score. She also played a key defensive role, including four putouts in the opener at Utah, which featured a diving catch in left field.
Portland is riding a four-game winning streak, the longest in the league so far this year. Meanwhile, Peja Goold made her professional debut with the Oklahoma City Spark on June 10. She entered in the fifth inning against Texas and kept the Spark in the game, earning her first victory in her second appearance.
Goold started her first game Sunday at Chicago, facing her former pitching coach Taryne Mowatt-McKinney. The Spark are currently 3-3 after splitting their first two series. They are set to face Utah on June 22-23 before traveling to Texas for a three-game series starting June 26.
The Cascade will host the Spark in the opening game of the second week of AUSL play Thursday night at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The series continues Friday and Sunday with games scheduled for 8 p.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively, on ESPN and ESPN2.
