Brett Young Encourages Ole Miss Graduates to Embrace Change and Dreams
The University of Mississippi celebrated its 173rd commencement Saturday in the Grove, where more than 6,000 graduates received their diplomas under clear skies and amid historic oak trees. Chancellor Glenn Boyce told graduates they are prepared to make an impact in the world and encouraged them to lead with courage.
Boyce emphasized that leadership is a choice and urged graduates to dare to face future challenges. He also highlighted the university’s long history of graduates making a difference, calling it a source of pride for the institution.
Former Ole Miss baseball player and country singer Brett Young served as the commencement speaker. Young, who returned to campus multiple times as a student and performer, shared lessons about dreams and adapting to change. He told graduates that their dreams can evolve and that it’s okay to pursue aspirations only they understand.
“Your dream does not have to make sense to anyone else,” Young said. “It was given to you. It can grow, change and expand into something even greater.” He encouraged graduates to embrace the unpredictable nature of their paths and view change as an opportunity for growth.
Among the graduates was McCala Kilpatrick, who earned a bachelor’s in psychology and plans to pursue graduate studies in mental health. She graduated alongside her sister, Anna Grace, who earned a degree in sports management. Kilpatrick said her Ole Miss experience was “exciting, challenging and incredibly rewarding.”
Virginia native Matthew Clark, who earned a marketing degree, plans to join the U.S. Coast Guard’s Officer Candidate School. Clark said he is proud to shout “Hotty Toddy” as he begins his next chapter.
The Baker family from Pennsylvania praised Ole Miss for its welcoming community. Gillian Baker, who earned a degree in integrated marketing communications, is preparing to move to Florida to work in sports marketing. Her father, William Baker, called the university’s environment “remarkable” and said watching his daughter grow over four years was emotional.
Throughout the ceremony, graduates celebrated their achievements with joy, sharing personal stories and looking forward to future opportunities. The event also featured faculty members, academic regalia, and a variety of personal touches on caps and gowns, marking a memorable milestone for all.
