Belhaven Women’s Basketball improves to 12-1 with win at Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Belhaven Women’s Basketball won its fifth consecutive game Friday, edging Covenant 72-60 on the road. The Blazers improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play, according to team officials.

Katelyn Coleman scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, marking her second 20-point game of the season. Savannah Hailey added 22 points and seven rebounds, while Veronica Williams posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

The Blazers took early control with interior scoring and strong defense. Hailey and Coleman combined for the first nine points as Belhaven opened with a 9-2 run in the first four minutes. Covenant responded briefly, but Belhaven pushed ahead again. Coleman scored twice in the paint, Williams hit a three-pointer, and the visitors led 21-17 after the first quarter.

The second quarter featured back-and-forth play. Belhaven extended its lead to six after RaMya King scored inside and Coleman converted free throws following a turnover. Covenant responded with a run that cut the deficit to two. Belhaven closed the half ahead, 34-30, after a 13-13 quarter.

Out of halftime, momentum shifted several times. Hailey scored six early points to keep Belhaven in front, but Covenant briefly took the lead during the quarter. The Blazers responded with key baskets from Coleman and Kiersten Hudson, and Williams added a fast-break layup, giving Belhaven a 50-49 lead entering the final period.

Belhaven pulled away in the fourth quarter with timely stops and free throws. Coleman started the period with a basket, and Hailey followed with a finish that sparked a 6-0 run. Coleman scored six straight points at the free-throw line and on the break, and Williams added two free throws as the Blazers built a double-digit lead. Belhaven shot 10-for-10 at the line in the quarter and limited Covenant to 11 points to secure the victory.
