Belhaven Women’s Basketball Dominates Wesleyan on Senior Day
JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven University’s women’s basketball team capped its regular season with an 80-48 victory over Wesleyan (Ga.) on Senior Day at Rugg Arena. The Blazers, celebrating their 10-member senior class, improved to 18-6 overall and 11-5 in the Collegiate Conference of the South.
Belhaven used a significant second-quarter run and a strong third-period surge to take control of the game. The team forced 33 turnovers and scored 29 points off those mistakes, with 11 players contributing to the scoring effort. Veronica Williams led all scorers with 14 points, while Kiersten Hudson added 12 and Jasi Jenkins finished with 11.
The game began with an energetic and emotional atmosphere. Wesleyan took an early lead with a three from Maya Whitehead, but the lead changed hands multiple times in the first quarter. Belhaven’s Kyla Farmer scored in the paint, and RaMya King hit a three to give the Blazers an 11-8 edge. Wesleyan closed the quarter with free throws from Jenaiya Hardy, leading 15-14 after one.
In the second quarter, Belhaven took control. Veronica Williams tied the game at 15, and Jasi Jenkins sparked a 10-2 run with a layup and a three-point play. The Blazers extended the lead to 29-23, aided by back-to-back three-pointers from Hudson and a transition three from Williams. Belhaven outscored Wesleyan 27-16 in the period and led 41-31 at halftime.
Belhaven continued its momentum after the break. Williams opened the third with a three, and a 10-2 run pushed the lead to 48-36. Hudson added another three during a 13-3 run, and Liddell hit a three as the lead grew to 18 points. Jenkins scored inside twice, and the Blazers held a 65-41 lead entering the final quarter.
The final period saw Belhaven extend its lead. Katelyn Coleman scored on back-to-back fast-break layups to ignite a 10-2 run, and Williams added a tip-in. Jones hit a fast-break three-pointer to push the lead to 31, and the team finished with its largest margin at 32 points. The Blazers now shift focus to the CCS Tournament, awaiting their seed announcement.
