Belhaven Softball Wins CCS Title After Rallying Through Elimination Bracket
Belhaven Softball claimed the CCS Championship after dropping its opening game and winning five consecutive games in the elimination bracket, according to the school. The Blazers defeated Huntingdon in the final two games Saturday at Choccolocco Park to secure the title.
Junior pitcher Macy Funderburk was named tournament MVP after going 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA and 32 innings pitched, tying the CCS record for wins and setting a new mark for innings. Funderburk improved to 9-0 in CCS Tournament games and earned MVP honors for the second straight season, the school said.
Belhaven’s run included five All-Tournament selections: Funderburk, Maryanna Guy, Maddie Bruner, Madeline Bullock, and Grace Langston. The team hit .368 with 63 hits and 49 runs over six games during the tournament.
The Blazers began the championship series with a 10-4 win over Huntingdon on Saturday. They took an early lead and broke the game open in the fourth and fifth innings, building a 9-0 advantage before the Hawks responded with four runs in the bottom half. Belhaven added an insurance run in the sixth and closed out the game.
In the second game, Belhaven secured the title with a 5-2 victory. Huntingdon scored first, but the Blazers answered immediately. They took control in the fourth inning and Funderburk finished a complete-game effort, earning her fifth win of the tournament. She also contributed defensively with a key double play in the seventh.
The team’s postseason success highlighted a .368 team batting average, with standout performances from Guy, Gillihan, Bruner, and Langston. Belhaven now awaits its regional destination for the NCAA Division III Tournament as the program aims for its third straight appearance.
