Belhaven Names Samuel Spencer as New Head Tennis Coach

Jackson, Mississippi — Samuel Spencer has been named the head coach of the Belhaven University men’s and women’s tennis teams, according to Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Little.

Little praised Spencer, saying, “Samuel knows the game, enjoys teaching it and cares about the people he coaches. He understands what we expect from our coaches at Belhaven: invest in our students, help them grow in their faith and prepare them to compete at a high level. We are glad to welcome him to the Blazers.”

Spencer joins Belhaven with coaching experience in Florida and Missouri. Most recently, he worked at Tennis Time Inc. in Tampa. Prior to that, he coached at Galindo Tennis Academy in Lakeland, Florida, where he led lessons for players from beginners to college-bound athletes. He also coached at Forest Lake Country Club in St. Louis and Woodsmill Tennis Club, overseeing league matches and coaching a USTA women’s team.

As a player, Spencer competed for John Brown University from 2017 to 2021, reaching as high as No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. He posted 13 singles wins and 15 doubles victories over his final three seasons. His best season was 2018-19, when he went 6-4 in singles and 8-3 in doubles.

In addition to coaching, Spencer has worked as a tennis writer and content producer. He created articles, equipment reviews and videos for Tennis Express and covered professional tennis for Serve On SI. Originally from Lilongwe, Malawi, Spencer earned a bachelor’s degree in English from John Brown University in 2021 and a master’s degree in creative writing from Liberty University in 2023.
