Belhaven Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season at Port City Invitational

The Belhaven University men’s golf team opened its spring schedule at the Port City Classic, a two-day tournament held at Savannah Country Club. Facing a competitive NCAA Division III field, the Blazers finished 20th with a three-round total of +94, highlighted by a strong final round.

The team struggled in the first two rounds, posting scores of +29 and +47. Schaefer Doane led the team in the opening round with a 75 (+4), followed by John McIntosh with a 78 (+7), Levi Turner with a 79 (+8), Gannon Williams with an 81 (+10), and Andrew Scherer with an 82 (+11). During the second round, McIntosh, Scherer, and Doane each shot 85s as the team faced difficulties on the Savannah layout.

The Blazers responded in the final round, shaving nearly 30 strokes from their second-round score. Williams shot a career-best 69 (-2), the only sub-par round by a Blazer during the tournament. His effort helped the team post its best round at +18 and moved him up the individual leaderboard. Williams finished the tournament at +13 overall after rounds of 81, 76, and 69, leading Belhaven and improving each day.

McIntosh remained consistent throughout, finishing second among the team at +21 with scores of 78, 85, and 71. Scherer finished at +33, while Turner and Doane each finished at +36. The Blazers will look to carry momentum into upcoming events, including the Hal Sutton Invitational on March 16 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
