Vicksburg, Mississippi — Two goals from Grace Ambrose in the first half helped the Alcorn State Lady Braves defeat Northwestern State 3-1 Thursday night at Key City Park.
Ambrose opened the scoring in the ninth minute, assisted by Deryn Doamekor, to give Alcorn State an early lead. She added a second goal in the 32nd minute, increasing the advantage to 2-0. Minutes later, Northwestern State committed a foul in the box, and Annick Zouma converted a penalty kick into the top corner, extending the lead to 3-0.
Alcorn State recorded nine shots in the first half and finished with 15 shots overall. The Demons responded early in the second half, scoring in the 43rd minute to trim the deficit to 3-1. The Lady Braves focused on defense the rest of the match, limiting Northwestern State’s chances and finishing with six shots in the second half.
Ambrose led all players with six shots, five on goal. It marked the second time this season she has taken six shots in a game. Bailey Perales earned her second win of the season in goal, making four saves. The Lady Braves also recorded six corner kicks and committed six fouls in the match.
With the win, Alcorn State improves to 2-1 against Southland Conference opponents this season. The team will next host Jacksonville State at 4 p.m. Thursday at Key City Park.
