LORMAN, Miss. — The Alcorn State Braves kicked off their football season with a commanding 56-7 victory over Miles College on Saturday night at Jack Spinks Stadium.
The Braves took the lead late in the first quarter, with Jaylon Tolbert connecting with Jamarr Ebron for a 26-yard touchdown with 48 seconds remaining. Miles College responded quickly, tying the game 7-7, but that was the only score the Golden Bears managed in the game.
Alcorn State then scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter, taking a 35-7 lead into halftime. The offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half, adding two more touchdowns on passes from Tolbert to Elijah Griffin and Kelly Tyree, both in the third quarter, to extend the lead to 49-7.
Tolbert finished with five passing touchdowns, completing 25 of 28 passes for 265 yards and rushing for another touchdown. His five passing touchdowns tied a program record last set by Felix Harper in 2019 against Savannah State.
Defensively, junior Eric Thomas Jr. led the team with six total tackles, while senior Timothy “TJ” Jasper recorded four solo tackles. The Braves will travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to face Southern Miss on Saturday, September 5, at 4 p.m.
