Alcorn State Football Completes First Week of Fall Camp
Alcorn State football completed its first week of fall camp Monday, as the team prepares for its season opener against Miles College on Aug. 29 in Lorman, Mississippi. Head coach Cedric Thomas, in his third season, said the focus during the early days has been on establishing physicality and building tempo and timing in the passing game.
Thomas noted that the team has come into camp with the right mindset. The first practice session lasted 18 periods starting at 7 a.m., with players trying to beat the Mississippi summer heat. Temperatures were in the low 80s, with light northeast winds, according to Thomas.
“You almost use the heat to your advantage. If we can push through August in Mississippi, that’s going to pay off in the fourth quarter in October and November,” Thomas said during a hydration break. On defense, preseason Southwestern Athletic Conference all-conference selection Eric Thomas Jr. has been a standout early in camp, flashing during 7-on-7 drills and team periods as the defense aims to improve on last season’s late-season turnaround.
The 7-on-7 work has provided coaches a clear view of the secondary and linebackers’ route-reading ability without line play. Thomas Jr. has been a consistent presence in those reps. “I’ve been pleased with how our guys have attacked it,” Thomas said. “Eric and the defensive line really look ready for the season.”
Quarterback competition continues between returning starter Jaylon Tolbert and challenger Bryan Wilson, both receiving extensive reps in passing drills. The battle has focused on decision-making, ball placement, and command of the offense, with both quarterbacks working against the first- and second-team defenses. Thomas praised the offensive line’s progress, noting their hunger and improvement each day.
Wide receivers are also emphasizing route running, working to improve releases and sell double moves against press coverage. Thomas highlighted players Aaron Anguiano and Deion Roberson, praising their dedication and the coaching staff’s perfectionist approach. The team’s season opener against Miles College is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Spinks – Marino Casem Stadium.
