Alcorn Men’s Tennis Ends Losing Streak with 5-0 Win Over Mississippi Valley State

Vicksburg, Miss. — Fabian Juarez, the only senior on Alcorn State’s men’s tennis team, was honored after the match Thursday as the Braves defeated visiting Mississippi Valley State 5-0 at Halls Ferry Tennis Courts. The victory ended a 15-match losing streak for the team and marked their first win over a Division I opponent this season, according to school officials.

Alcorn, with a 4-17 record overall and 1-3 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, jumped to an early lead by winning doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Tomas Grime and Jorge Prats Navarrete defeated Malachi Finley and Ezekial Smoot 6-0, while Juarez and Sebastian Griffiths topped Blessed Kutyauripo and Luka Sari by the same score.

In singles play, Alcorn’s Vincent Llobell Buigues, Grime, Navarrete and Juarez secured decisive 6-0, 6-0 victories at positions three through six. Matches at the top two singles spots involving Griffiths versus Joshua Mbasha and Matthew Holl versus Sibusico Dube remained unfinished after the team result was decided.

The team concludes its regular season Saturday with a SWAC matchup against Jackson State in Jackson, Mississippi. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m., according to the school’s athletics department.
