Alabama State pulls away from Mississippi Valley State in late innings

Montgomery, Alabama — Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team fell 11-3 to Alabama State on Saturday at Wheeler-Watkins Complex. The game appeared close until a five-run eighth inning by the Hornets widened the margin in the final stages.

The Diamond Devils, now 11-26 overall and 7-12 in SWAC play, struggled to contain Alabama State, which improved to 21-19 and 11-8 in conference. The Hornets lead the all-time series 68-24 and have won the last game since April 19, 2025.

Daniel Scott pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits. Cody Leming led at the plate with two hits, a run scored, and a double. Chris Soeder also contributed two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Johnny Escobalez Jr. reached safely multiple times with a single and a walk. Tanner Aoki, Gabe Huelsing, Tom Early, and Ty Burns also contributed offensively, each reaching base or driving in runs.
