Alabama State Beats Alcorn 4-0 in SWAC Men’s Tennis Opener
Montgomery, Alabama — Alabama State opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference men’s tennis season with a 4-0 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
The Hornets claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Eloi Roux and Milan Ristov defeated Alcorn’s Jorge Prats Navarrete and Fabian Juarez 6-2 at No. 3. In a close match at No. 2, Matteo Lataste and Martin Catrice edged Sebastian Griffiths and Tomas Grime 7-6 (7-4).
In singles play, the top three matches went unfinished. Alabama State took a 2-0 lead after Vid Maric defeated Juarez 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Alcorn’s Griffiths led 4-1 in the third set against Ristov at No. 1, but the match was not completed. Roux secured the win for Alabama State at No. 4, defeating Gime 6-2, 6-2.
The match was decided at No. 6, where Loris Gueli beat Navarrete 6-2, 7-5. Alcorn, now 3-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play, remains hopeful for future matches. Head coach Kersten Vanem-Walker acknowledged the challenges but emphasized learning from the loss and improving.
