Ole Miss Loses First SEC Road Game at No. 21 Florida, 52-28
The University of Mississippi football team suffered its first Southeastern Conference road loss of the season, falling to No. 21 Florida 52-28 Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville.
Ole Miss, ranked No. 4, dropped to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play. Florida improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in conference games. Trinidad Chambliss accounted for more than 300 yards of total offense despite the loss, completing 25 of 34 passes for 298 yards and a touchdown. He also added 64 rushing yards and two scores.
Chambliss extended his school record to 17 consecutive games with a touchdown pass, the third-longest streak in school history behind Matt Corral’s 19-game run. Deuce Alexander led the Rebels in receiving with seven catches for 134 yards, marking his second 100-yard game of the season.
Defensively, linebacker Keaton Thomas led Ole Miss with 11 tackles and a pass breakup. Jehiem Oatis recorded a career-high four tackles, and Blake Purchase logged a tackle for loss for the second consecutive game.
Florida opened the scoring with a 65-yard drive, capped by a Jadan Baugh touchdown run. The Gators added a field goal to lead 10-0 after the first quarter. Ole Miss responded with a field goal early in the second quarter, but Florida extended its lead before halftime with a touchdown run and a field goal, leading 17-6 at the break.
In the third quarter, Chambliss threw a 49-yard pass to Alexander, and then scored his 17th career touchdown on a rushing attempt to bring the Rebels within three points. Florida answered with a rushing touchdown, but Ole Miss responded again with a second rushing score from Chambliss, narrowing the gap to 31-24.
The Gators pulled away in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns, including a 52-yard pass, to seal the victory. Ole Miss scored a late touchdown on a pass from Chambliss to Alexander but could not close the gap.
The Rebels will have a bye next week before traveling to Vanderbilt on Oct. 10 for their next game.
