Ole Miss focuses on execution, Auburn QB ahead of home game
Ole Miss is working to address late-game breakdowns and slow starts as it prepares to host Auburn, coach Pete Golding said this week. The Rebels are coming off a narrow road loss at Texas and will return to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for their next game.
Golding said the team reviewed the Texas game together before taking Monday off. He said Ole Miss needs to focus on controllable details and avoid pressing as the season enters a critical stretch. The coach also said the offense has not consistently started games with the timing and execution the staff expects.
Running back Kewan Lacy is unavailable, and Golding said Ole Miss will need contributions from Makhi Frazier, Shakai Mills-Knight and JT Lindsey. He also pointed to Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown’s ability to run and pass as a key challenge for the Rebels’ defense.
Golding praised the defense’s response after halftime against Texas but said the team must correct its late-game issues to compete consistently against top opponents. He also said the home crowd can help Ole Miss build momentum at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Offensive lineman Delano Townsend said communication has helped the line handle injuries and changes to its rotation. He cited the familiarity among himself, Brycen Sanders and Kutas, saying the group’s communication helps maintain consistency when players shift into new roles.
Tight end Caleb Odom also credited the line’s communication and physical play. He said Ole Miss needs to start faster and avoid early mistakes, adding that the team’s preparation in practice is focused on putting itself in position to finish the season strongly.
Defensive end Blake Purchase described Brown as a dynamic runner who can also throw effectively. Purchase said the Rebels need to pursue Brown together and bring multiple defenders to make the tackle. He said Ole Miss’ experience facing mobile quarterbacks, including Lincoln Kienholz and teammate Trinidad Chambliss, has helped with preparation.
