Northwest volleyball players earn MACCC weekly honors
Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball players Jania Rose and Sofia Gonzalez earned MACCC Player of the Week honors after the Rangers’ run to the Region 23 championship. Rose was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time, while Gonzalez received the offensive award for the first time this season.
Rose recorded 31 digs during the week, including double-digit totals in both the semifinal and championship matches. She has 421 digs this season and more than 800 in her career. Rose became Northwest’s all-time leader in digs earlier this season. She also had 29 serve receptions with one error, a .966 reception rate.
Gonzalez led the Rangers with 36 kills for the week, hitting nearly .500, according to the school. The freshman had 18 kills and three errors against Jones College, then added 18 kills without an error across matches against Meridian and Pearl River. She also recorded four aces and two assists and was five kills short of 400 for the season.
The school’s Nov. 3 announcement said Northwest was scheduled to play No. 15 Lurleen B. Wallace Community College on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at Howard Coliseum. The winner was set to claim the Gulf South District title and an automatic berth in the NJCAA Division II National Championship, which begins Nov. 18 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Admission was listed at $10.
