Jones College women’s soccer dominates East Mississippi in conference opener, 7-0

ELLISVILLE — Jones College’s women’s soccer team opened MACCC conference play with a dominant performance Monday, defeating East Mississippi 7-0 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Bobcats improved to 5-0-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Jones controlled the match from the start, finishing with 36 shots, including 25 on goal, while limiting East Mississippi to just one attempt. The Bobcats scored three goals in the first half and added four more after the break.

Less than two minutes into the game, Karla Ovalle of Panama City, Panama, set up Graison Holder of Laurel for her first goal of the season. Holder’s shot beat the East Mississippi keeper to give Jones a 1-0 lead. In the 19th minute, Ovalle earned a penalty kick but was denied by the EMCC goalkeeper. However, she redeemed herself in the 23rd minute, beating the keeper one-on-one for her fifth goal of the season and doubling the lead.

Astrid Ortiz of Hattiesburg extended the lead to 3-0 in the 35th minute with her second goal of the season, scooping up a pass and firing it past the keeper. Jones went into halftime with a commanding 13-0 shot advantage and three corner kicks.

After the break, Jameyah Hubbard of Tupelo scored in the 52nd minute off a pass from Brianna Kimbrell of Olive Branch. Less than 10 minutes later, Maryanne Ward of Ireland found Jorgelis Serna of Panama unmarked at the back post. Serna scored her first career goal in the 61st minute, making it 5-0.

Serna added a second goal in the final minutes after a rebound, and Dillyn Biancamano of Long Beach scored her first goal less than a minute later, finishing Kimbrell’s second assist. The Bobcats finished with 23 shots in the second half and 36 overall, maintaining an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Jones’s defense posted a shutout, with Jennifer Huerzeler and Darby Ford sharing goalkeeping duties.

Jones will travel to face Copiah-Lincoln on Friday, Sept. 18, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m., according to the school.
