Hinds Football Beats Southwest Mississippi 17-10 in South Division Opener
SUMMIT, Miss. — The Hinds Community College football team defeated Southwest Mississippi Community College 17-10 Thursday night at John I. Hurst Stadium. The win marked the Eagles’ first game in MACCC South Division play this season, leaving them with a 2-2 record overall and 1-0 in division play.
Hinds jumped to an early lead and held off a fourth-quarter rally by the Bears. The Eagles scored first on a 36-yard field goal from Braylen Spann with 7:34 remaining in the first quarter. Quarterback Jaylon Ruffin then connected with Kelton Young on a 35-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, making it 10-0.
Ruffin added another touchdown pass before halftime, finding Kiandre Terry on a one-yard completion on fourth down, giving Hinds a 17-0 lead at the break. Ruffin finished 19-of-33 passing for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Young led the team with 45 rushing yards on three carries and added a touchdown reception for 35 yards. Terry caught six passes for 46 yards and a score, while DJ Miller had five receptions for 68 yards.
Makari Bodiford led the rushing effort with 68 yards on 15 carries. Southwest scored in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard field goal from Simon Naylor. Jakari Williams then threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Tajh Williby to cut the deficit to 17-10.
Hinds’ defense held strong in the final minutes, recording seven tackles for loss and two interceptions. Floyd Harris and Dayne Robichaux each had six tackles, while Elijah Hunter and Jvaris Walden each intercepted passes. The special teams also contributed, with Wyatt Long averaging 38.9 yards per punt on seven kicks, including a long of 48 yards and three punts inside the 20.
