ELLISVILLE — Mississippi Gulf Coast handed No. 24 Jones College its first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory Wednesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium. The Bulldogs (7-2) played with intensity from the start, capitalizing on 28 attack errors by the Bobcats and dominating the back row with a 69-38 dig advantage, according to match statistics.
Jones (10-4) outperformed Gulf Coast in kills, blocks, and total points, but the Bulldogs’ rally extensions and mistake capitalizations proved decisive. Gulf Coast hit .296 in the first set, recording 11 kills with only three errors on 27 swings. Despite 12 kills in the opening set, Jones committed seven attack errors and hit .179, allowing Gulf Coast to take the early lead.
The Bobcats responded in the second set, tallying 16 kills and hitting .278, with just six errors on 36 attempts, to even the match. However, Jones struggled offensively afterward, finishing with eight kills and eight errors in the third set. Gulf Coast responded strongly in the fourth, hitting .273 with 13 kills and four errors on 33 attacks, while Jones managed 11 kills but committed seven errors, hitting .133 as Gulf Coast closed out the match.
Despite the loss, Izzi Barnes led Jones offensively with 14 kills and a .619 hitting percentage, adding three blocks and 16 points. Selah Sandridge contributed 10 kills, while Myah Favre added nine kills and three blocks. Amaya Wilson chipped in five kills and two blocks. Claire Wicker led the Bobcats with 24 assists, and Addyson Sides added 16. Olivia Guth led Jones defensively with 12 digs and an ace.
For Gulf Coast, Lilly Rutland posted a match-high 18 kills on a .349 hitting percentage and added 12 digs. Mariah Hammond contributed nine kills, while Reese Sorrells had six. Ella Bilbo dished out 26 assists and recorded two aces. Campbell Herrington anchored the Bulldogs’ defense with 26 digs, as three players reached double figures defensively. Gulf Coast’s ability to extend rallies and turn attacks into second opportunities was a key factor in the outcome.
The match was closely contested in several statistical categories. Jones led in kills (47-45), blocks (6-5), assists (43-41), and total points (57-55). However, the Bobcats committed nine more attack errors (28-19), and Gulf Coast had a higher hitting percentage (.205 to .154). The Bulldogs’ 31-dig advantage was especially impactful in controlling extended rallies.
