Coahoma Falls Short in 42-41 Heartbreaker Against Itawamba

CLARKSDALE, Miss. — The Coahoma Community College Tigers narrowly missed a comeback victory, losing 42-41 to Itawamba Community College on Thursday at James E. Miller Stadium.

The Tigers gained 516 yards of total offense, including 233 rushing yards and 283 passing yards, but surrendered a go-ahead touchdown with 40 seconds remaining. Coahoma took an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind two rushing touchdowns from Prentavis Madison, including a 25-yard run.

Itawamba responded with a two-yard touchdown and then cut the deficit with an 98-yard run by Tydarion Grier. The Tigers extended their lead to 28-14 before halftime after quarterback Jacob Clopton connected with Abraylen Jenkins for an 18-yard touchdown pass. The teams traded scores in the third quarter, with Itawamba’s Braylon Matthews catching a 28-yard pass and Clopton rushing for a six-yard touchdown to keep Coahoma ahead 35-21.

The Indians rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 26-yard pass to Grier and a two-yard run by Grier, pulling within three points. Coahoma’s Andrew Harrison then kicked a 38-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 41-35 lead with 1:36 remaining. However, Brayden Trusty led Itawamba on a 71-yard drive, culminating in a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ter’Myihias Welch with 40 seconds left to secure the victory.

Jacob Clopton completed 21 of 29 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns, also rushing for 82 yards and a score. Madison led the rushing attack with 83 yards and two touchdowns, while Isaac Day added 65 yards on 11 carries. Jenkins caught nine passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. Harrison made all five extra points and converted two of three field goals, from 34 and 38 yards.

Defensive back Arlanders Stovall intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 28 yards, setting up the final field goal. Coahoma is a public community college serving the Mississippi Delta, founded in 1949 and celebrating its 77th year of operation. The college offers diverse academic programs and participates in NJCAA athletics, including football.
