No. 13 Copiah-Lincoln shuts out No. 15 Jones after early lead, 26-7

Wesson, Miss. — No. 15 Jones College’s opening drive resulted in a touchdown, but the Bobcats couldn’t sustain their momentum. No. 13 Copiah-Lincoln shut down Jones offensively for the remainder of the game and won 26-7 Thursday night at H.L. Stone Stadium.

Jones (3-2, 1-1) took a 7-0 lead after a nine-play, 73-yard drive that lasted more than five minutes. Jevarion Glover threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Tyree Barnett, and Wyatt Jones added the extra point with 9:49 remaining in the first quarter. The Bobcats’s offense then stalled, managing just 102 yards over their final 10 drives.

Co-Lin (3-2, 1-1) responded with 26 unanswered points, beginning with a touchdown by Ja’Quan Bentley on a one-yard run with 3:23 left in the first quarter. The extra point was missed, leaving Jones ahead 7-6. The Wolves took control early in the second quarter, with Jaylen Pettway connecting with Zabryan Hood on a 20-yard score, giving Co-Lin a 13-7 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Bentley scored his second touchdown on a four-yard run, extending the lead to 19-7. A 70-yard touchdown pass from Pettway to Bryant Sanchez in the third quarter put the game out of reach at 26-7. Neither team scored in the final quarter.

Glover completed 10 of 24 passes for 175 yards, a touchdown, and an interception for Jones. Jet Henderson led receiving with three catches for 50 yards. Jones rushed for 79 yards on 29 carries. Pettway accounted for 260 yards of offense for Co-Lin, throwing two touchdown passes to Hood and Sanchez. Hood finished with 70 yards, and Kendarious Porter added 73 yards rushing.

KeVon Ford led Jones defensively with a career-high seven tackles. The Bobcats have lost two straight games to Co-Lin after winning seven consecutive in the series. Jones will host No. 3 Gulf Coast (5-0) on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. for Homecoming. Tickets are $11 online or $15/$16 at the gate. The game will stream on jcbobcats.com/watch.
