Bishop State beats Northwest Mississippi 69-49 in Rangers’ opener
Northwest Mississippi Community College opened its women’s basketball season with a 69-49 loss to Bishop State Community College, falling behind by 20 points at halftime in Senatobia.
The Rangers scored six points in the first quarter while Bishop State put up 21. Northwest’s offense improved in the second, but the Wildcats again scored 21 to take a 42-22 halftime lead. The Rangers were outscored in the third quarter, 20-15, before winning the low-scoring fourth, 12-7.
Northwest committed 23 turnovers and made 5 of 13 free throws. Coach LaTaryl Williams said he expected more energy from his team in its home opener and was disappointed it did not appear earlier in the game. He said the Rangers would not win with those kinds of numbers.
Williams said injuries meant Zoe Metcalf was the only player who had previously played in a Northwest uniform. He said the team showed more energy after halftime, but turnovers and shot selection remained problems.
The Rangers were scheduled to face No. 10 Three Rivers at the Three Rivers Classic in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, on Friday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m., according to the source. Northwest entered the opener 0-1, while Bishop State improved to 1-0.
