HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss senior setter Allie Hazelwood has been named the Sun Belt Conference Setter of the Week for the second time this season, according to the university. Hazelwood led the Golden Eagles to two wins on the road against Louisiana Tech over the weekend.
Hazelwood facilitated a potent offense as Southern Miss opened Sun Belt play with a 2-0 record in Ruston, Louisiana. The team averaged 14.57 kills per set, the third-highest mark in the conference this week, and hit .239 as a team, ranking fifth in the league.
Hazelwood led the Sun Belt in both total assists and assists per set for the week. She recorded 83 assists, averaging 11.86 assists per set. She opened the weekend with 37 assists in a 3-0 victory over Louisiana Tech on Friday, the most assists by any Sun Belt player in a three-set match this week. Hazelwood also contributed two kills and five digs in that match.
The Golden Eagles completed the sweep with a four-set win Saturday. Hazelwood posted her third double-double of the season, tallying 46 assists and 14 digs. Her 46 assists were the most by any Sun Belt player in a single match this week. Through 13 matches, Hazelwood leads the conference with an average of 10.74 assists per set, ranking 14th nationally. She has totaled 494 assists, the second-most in the league.
Hazelwood’s consecutive weekly honors mark the first time a Southern Miss volleyball player has earned multiple conference Setter of the Week awards in the same season since 2011. Kelsea Seymour earned back-to-back Conference USA Setter of the Week honors on Nov. 14 and Nov. 21 that year. Hazelwood is also the first player in program history to earn multiple Sun Belt Setter of the Week awards since the team joined the conference in 2022.
