Mississippi Valley State Opens SWAC Play on the Road at Alabama State

Montgomery, Ala. — Mississippi Valley State football opens Southwestern Athletic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Delta Devils travel to face Alabama State at ASU Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT, and the game will be streamed live on SWAC TV.

The contest marks MVSU’s third road game of the season and its first conference game of the 2026 campaign. The Delta Devils hold a 1-3 record after four nonconference games, including a 31-20 win over Lincoln (Pa.) in Chicago and a 21-6 loss to Delta State at home.

Mississippi Valley State has seen offensive players step up early in the season. Quarterback Josh Brown has completed 47 of 83 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns. He also leads the team with 147 rushing yards on 28 carries, averaging 5.3 yards per attempt. Running backs Dezmond Ray and Norman Taylor have added 107 and 98 rushing yards, respectively.

Wide receiver Dayvian Bluitt has been a big-play threat, totaling 195 yards on nine catches, with a season-long reception of 79 yards and one touchdown. Jaylen King has 14 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, while Nicholas Buggs has six catches for 92 yards and a score.

Defensively, the Delta Devils have forced three turnovers, with each of Joey Davis, Jamari Stokes, and Tyrell Johnson recording an interception. Johnson’s 95-yard interception return for a touchdown is the season’s longest for MVSU.

Alabama State opened the season with wins over Southern and Lane College but lost 34-17 at Troy on Sept. 12. The Hornets enter Saturday at 2-1, with both teams starting their SWAC schedule on the road.
