Memphis Volleyball Edges Alcorn in Three Sets

Memphis, Tenn. — Alcorn State’s volleyball team lost to the University of Memphis on Thursday morning in a three-set match. The Braves, who entered with an 0-7 record, competed in all three sets and demonstrated progress in the second and third frames.

Memphis dominated the first set, winning 25-6. Alcorn battled early, with Rylan Jones leading with two kills, but the Tigers built an early lead with multiple aces and maintained control throughout.

The Braves improved in the second set, pushing Memphis to the limit. Memphis secured a 25-17 victory, despite Alcorn cutting the deficit to 23-16 late in the set. Alcorn continued to fight in the third set, pulling within two points at 14-12 after a 6-0 run that featured kills from Jones and Cristin Webb, as well as a service ace from Courtney Carter.

Alcorn kept the pressure on, narrowing the gap to 16-14 and later 19-15. However, Memphis regained momentum to close out the match with a 25-17 win in the final set. Jones led the team with 14 kills and a .206 hitting percentage, while Webb finished with four kills. Daylin Saiki contributed 19 assists, and Giddings added 11 digs.

The Braves are scheduled to face Mississippi State on Friday at 3 p.m. in their next match.
