Lee Tops Mississippi College 2-1 in Men’s Soccer
Lee defeated Mississippi College 2-1 Saturday at Ray Conn Sports Complex in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Choctaws generated seven of their nine shots in the second half and put four shots on goal, but Lee held a 12-9 shot advantage, according to sources.
The match was marked by contact, with a total of 29 fouls and three yellow cards issued to Lee. Lee created the first chances with a corner kick at 11:27 and a shot by Thomas Stift that went high. Mississippi College responded when Benjamin Ellis scored unassisted at 14:30 to give the Choctaws an early lead.
Lee responded with pressure later in the first half. Elliot Duffy made two key saves, including one on Andreas Aspris at 36:18 and another on Matias Milla Munoz at 36:39, before Stift scored at 36:39 to tie the match at 1-1. The teams went into halftime tied, with Duffy making another save on Simpson Moore at 44:32.
Early in the second half, Duffy saved a shot from Reed Shunkwiler at 47:00. Lee regained the lead when Andreas Aspris scored at 56:14 off an assist from Ole Backfisch. The Blue and Gold pressed offensively, with shots from Gabriel Paes e Sa and Karim Gegg that were saved or missed. Lee also created multiple chances, including a corner kick and several shots in the final minutes.
During a contentious stretch around the 79th to 87th minutes, Lee received three yellow cards. Despite multiple attempts by Mississippi College, including shots from Patrick Vukoje, Harry McLean, and Gegg, the team was unable to score again. Lee maintained its 2-1 lead to the final whistle.
Benjamin Ellis scored his only shot on goal to account for the Choctaws’ goal. Gegg led the team with three shots, two on goal. Duffy played all 90 minutes in goal, finishing with four saves. Mississippi College’s record now stands at 2-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play, while Lee improved to 6-2-2 overall and 3-2-0 in league play.
The Blue and Gold will host AUM on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 3:30 p.m. in Clinton, Mississippi, in their next match, according to team officials.
