Belhaven Volleyball Completes Historic Comeback Against Asbury
WILMORE, Ky. — Belhaven volleyball secured its first victory over Asbury with a five-set comeback Saturday at the Luce Center. The Blazers were 0-4 all-time against the Eagles and had not won a set before the match. After losing the first two sets, Belhaven won three straight to earn the win, 18-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 16-14.
Belhaven moved to 1-2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South and finished the day 6-8 overall. The Blazers later fell to Spalding in three sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-22.
In the first set, Belhaven led early but was overtaken by Asbury, which hit .213 and finished with 17 kills. The Eagles took the second set despite a late rally by the Blazers. In the third, Belhaven took control early, with key plays from Cami Davis, Laila Gauthier, and Angel Edwards helping to secure a 25-14 win.
The Blazers trailed in the fourth set but stormed back, scoring seven consecutive points to tie at 13-13. They eventually took the set 25-22 after back-and-forth play. In the decisive fifth set, Belhaven opened with a 5-2 lead and held off Asbury’s rally to win 16-14, led by Megan LaCour’s clutch kill.
Gauthier led Belhaven with 10 kills, while LaCour added eight. Davis and Woodall each finished with seven kills. Davis also hit .400 and recorded four blocks. Maggie Joy Tomlin contributed a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs. Robinson led the back row with 28 digs, and Woodall added 14 digs and three aces.
Despite the loss, Asbury outperformed Belhaven in kills (60-36) and digs (93-69). The Blazers committed just 18 attacking errors compared to 39 by the Eagles. Belhaven also served 10 aces and had eight total blocks.
In the match against Spalding, the Blazers struggled to contain the Golden Eagles, who led from the start of the first set. Spalding’s Kylie Minnis finished with 16 kills, helping to close out the match. Gauthier led Belhaven with eight kills and hit .278, while Tomlin posted 13 assists and 11 digs in the second match.
