Belhaven Overcomes LaGrange in Second Half to Open Conference Play with Win

JACKSON, Miss. — Belhaven scored four unanswered goals, including three after halftime, to defeat LaGrange 4-1 in the Collegiate Conference of the South opener Saturday at Belhaven Bowl Stadium. The Blazers improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

LaGrange took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Tatianna McCoy finished a pass from Carsen Makuch. The lead was short-lived. Alexis Whiting, who entered in the 19th minute, equalized for Belhaven at the 24:53 mark off an assist from Alyssa Wilson. The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1.

Wilson put the Blazers ahead just 25 seconds into the second half, scoring off a pass from Whiting. Belhaven maintained pressure, forcing saves from LaGrange goalkeeper Anna Wright on attempts by Alaina Scott and Londyn LeJeune. Faith Dreyer extended the lead with a shot from just outside the box in the 65th minute, making it 3-1.

Jensen Ward added a final goal in the 87th minute. Abby Jordan nearly scored a fifth late in the match, but Wright made the save. Belhaven dominated the second half with a 15-4 shots advantage and all four of its corner kicks.

Wilson led the team with a goal and an assist, while Whiting placed both of her attempts on target. LeJeune led in shots with three. Goalkeeper Addi Roberts made two saves in 71 minutes, and Sidney Roest closed out the match for the final 18:18.
