Alcorn State women’s soccer (2-3) welcomes Jacksonville State (1-3-2) to Key Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on Thursday for a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Braves are coming off their first win of the season, a 3-1 victory over Northwestern State on Aug. 30, marking the program’s first-ever win over the Demons. Grace Amberose scored twice in that match, boosting her national ranking.
Jacksonville State enters the game looking to rebound after a tough start to the season. The Gamecocks have not played in the United Soccer Coaches poll this year. Alcorn is also unranked in the latest rankings. Coach Kabiru emphasized the importance of discipline and focus ahead of the matchup, noting that Jacksonville State defeated the Braves last season and presents a challenging opponent.
Alcorn State leads the all-time series 3-0, with all games played since 2019. The teams will meet for the first time in Vicksburg. The previous matchup took place on Sept. 15, 2019, at Alcorn State. The Braves hope to turn the tide this season after falling 1-0 to Jacksonville State in their last encounter, with the game decided in the 71st minute.
Standout players for Alcorn include Amberose, who was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for September 8-14, and Sophia Bobie, named SWAC Defensive Player of the Week. Amberose ranks 13th nationally with six goals this season. Jacksonville State’s key contributors include Emma Reeder, with three goals and 13 shots, and Sunny Ferren, with one goal and two assists.
