Alcorn State Opens SWAC Soccer Play Against Alabama State

Alcorn State’s women’s soccer team will open Southwestern Athletic Conference play Sunday against Alabama State at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Alabama, according to school officials.

The Lady Braves are coming off a 5-0 loss to No. 7 North Carolina last week. Alcorn is currently 3-4-1 overall. Alabama State is 0-7-1 and has scored three goals this season, led by Tamami Nishio with two goals.

Alcorn State leads the series against Alabama State, holding a 13-6-1 record. The last meeting saw the Lady Braves dominate with a 6-0 victory in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in 2022. Iesha Rollins scored a hat trick in that game, with goals in the 4th, 10th, and 34th minutes. Annick Zouma and Sophia Lopez also scored, with Lopez adding her second goal off an assist.

In the previous matchup, Alabama State was held without a shot on target and managed just five corner kicks. The Hornets limited Alcorn to one shot in the second half but failed to find the net.

Alcorn’s Grace Ambrose is ranked fifth nationally in goals, with eight on the season. The Lady Braves currently lead the SWAC standings.
