The Alcorn State Lady Braves will begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play this weekend with two home matches at the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. They face Grambling State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at noon, according to school officials.
Alcorn enters the weekend with a 0-10 record overall and has not competed in a conference game. The team is led by Rylan Jones, who has 93 kills and 98.5 points, and Courtney Carter, with 84 kills and 10 service aces, according to team statistics. Jaylynn McNeill has a team-high .223 hitting percentage and 49 kills.
In their most recent meeting, Alcorn was swept by Grambling State 3-0 on Nov. 19, 2023. The Lady Braves defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 on Nov. 10, 2023, in their last matchup. Grambling State is led by Lyric Jordan, who has 133 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s top scorer is Ashanti Butler, with 90 kills and 29 blocks.
Alcorn is coached by interim head coach Gabrielle Harris, who is in her second year. The team’s upcoming schedule includes a trip to Houston to face Texas Southern on Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.
