The following is a list of 16 Northeast Mississippi basketball players to watch in 2022-2023. 

(The list is given in alphabetical order.)

  8. Darby Pitts, SR, Mantachie
  9. Mariah Reed-Jones, SR, Lafayette
  10. Mikayla Riley, SR, Tupelo 
  11. Jade Rucker, SO, Tupelo

CARLIE BROCK, SO, BELMONT

Last Season: 13 PPG, 4 RPG, 4 APG, 3 SPG 

Carlie Brock is the most explosive, dynamic guard in the area. The sophomore is extremely competitive and a relentless attacker. She should have a huge season for Belmont and her future upside is high.

SANIYAH COOK, SO, BOONEVILLE 

Last Season: 15 PPG, 11 PPG

Saniyah Cook will give Booneville a vital post presence. She is a very solid inside player with developing skills. Cook will benefit from good guard play, allowing her to do damage in the paint. 

AUDRIA HOUSTON, SR, TUPELO 

Last Season: 10 PPG, 3 RPG, 2 APG 

Audria Houston has been a popular name in the area for a couple of years. She is able to handle the ball and score. Because Tupelo is so loaded, her stats may vary from night to night. Look for Houston to make clutch plays for the Lady Wave in close games.

JAYDEN LOWERY, SR, WHEELER

Last Season: 13 PPG, 8 RPG, 2 APG 

Jayden Lowery may be a surprise name on this list to some, but the senior guard has been improving every year. She has the ability to affect the game in multiple ways. Wheeler will go as far as Lowery leads them. 

REESE MOORE, JR, TISHOMINGO COUNTY

Last Season: 17 PPG, 6 RPG

Reese Moore is a lengthy guard who can put up points in a variety of ways. She will be counted on to replace some of the scoring punch that Tishomingo County lost. She is more than capable of carrying the load for the Lady Braves.

NADIA NORFLEET, SO, TUPELO 

Last Season: 8 PPG, 2 APG 

Nadia Norfleet is an impressive young guard who will be a big part of Tupelo’s attack. She has handles and still has a lot of great ball in front of her. If you don’t know her name, you will. 

MACIE PHIFER, SO, INGOMAR

Last Season: 20 PPG, 8 RPG 

Macie Phifer now holds a state championship MVP in basketball (2021) and volleyball (2022). She is a physically gifted athlete who holds multiple D-1 basketball offers. Expect her to continue to grow as a player, which is scary for the opposition. 

DARBY PITTS, SR, MANTACHIE

Last Season: 16 PPG, 5 RPG, 3 SPG

Darby Pitts is one of the best shooters around and is a strong leader for the Mantachie Lady Mustangs. She does whatever her team needs from her on both ends of the court.  

MARIAH REED-JONES, SR, LAFAYETTE

Last Season: 17 PPG, 7 RPG, 3 APG, 4 SPG 

Mariah Reed-Jones is an athletic stat sheet stuffer who can do a little bit of everything for Lafayette. She will need to be good every night for the Lady Dores in 5A.

MIKAYLA RILEY, SR, TUPELO 

Last Season: 10 PPG, 4 RPG 

Mikayla Riley is a strong, versatile player. She can do work inside and outside for the Lady Wave. She will look to provide senior leadership and take her team to Jackson. 

JADE RUCKER, SO, TUPELO 

Last Season: 6 PPG, 4 RPG  

Jade Rucker has the most upside of any player on this list. Her length and ability are rare traits. She is a player to see over the next few years in Northeast Mississippi. 

HANNAH SEAGO, SR, BIGGERSVILLE

Last Season: 15 PPG, 5 APG, 2 SPG

Hannah Seago is an attacking floor general. She can take over a game by putting pressure on opposing defenses. She is super competitive and will look to finish her career with back-to-back state titles. 

ASIA STAFFORD, SR, BIGGERSVILLE

Last Season: 18 PPG, 14 RPG, 2 BPG

Asia Stafford is another strong inside presence in Northeast Mississippi. She can control the paint and the boards. She is a difference maker on both ends of the floor for the Lady Lions. 

MARY GRACE STORMENT, SR, BELMONT 

Last Season: 19 PPG, 5 RPG

Mary Grace Storment knows how to score the ball. She is very effective when she drives to the basket. Storment should conclude a great career by helping Belmont back to Jackson.  

ALORIAN STORY, JR, RIPLEY

Last Season: 18 PPG, 10 RPG

Alorian Story can be the most dominant post player in the area. She averaged a double-double as a sophomore and should improve on those numbers this year. Ripley will lean on her in a tough 4A division. 

MADILYNN VUNCANNON, SR, WALNUT 

Last Season: 28 PPG, 11 RPG, 4 SPG

Madi Vuncannon is the only player on this list who has already committed. She is headed to Delta State next year. She is the best shooter on this list and leads Walnut with confidence and toughness.

Kelby Johnson

Kelby Johnson has been in Mississippi sports in many areas such as coaching, officiating, public address announcing, scouting, and writing. He is a pastor, a husband, and a father of four. Kelby and his family live in Ecru, MS.
