William Carey Softball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. — William Carey’s softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Crusaders fell 4-2 to No. 9 Our Lady of the Lake before bouncing back with a 7-1 win over Bethel (Tenn.).

In the first game, the Saints jumped ahead early. They capitalized on a walk and hit-by-pitch to set up Lilly Rocha’s RBI single that scored Arianna Alejandro. Yezenia Perez added a fielder’s-choice RBI to make it 2-0. Carey’s pitcher Jayden Sawyer worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Lady Crusaders in the game.

OLLU extended its lead with two more runs in the fourth. Walks and an RBI double from Alyssa Guzman contributed to the damage. Alejandro’s single scored a run, pushing the lead to 4-0. Carey’s defense kept the Saints from adding more, with Albanie Fussell and Liz Cross making key plays in the field.

Carey began its rally in the fifth, with Brooklynn Montana hitting an RBI double. Jayden Sawyer responded in the sixth with a solo home run. The Lady Crusaders threatened again in the seventh, but the Saints recorded three straight outs to secure the win.

In the second game, Carey struck first in the second inning. Sawyer drew a walk, Shaw singled, and Harper Dupre delivered an RBI single. Bethel responded in the bottom half, tying the game with a double and a groundout.

Carey regained the lead in the fourth when Liz Cross hit an RBI single. She stayed hot in the sixth with a triple that scored Dupre, then scored on a Bethel error to extend the lead. The Crusaders put the game away in the seventh with a three-run inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Dupre and an RBI triple from Rodriguez.

Ryanne Hornsby and the Carey defense closed out the game, escaping a seventh-inning threat with a double play. The Crusaders will return to the field Sunday for two more games at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex, facing Campbellsville and Saint Xavier (Ill.), weather permitting.
