UNC Greensboro Defeats Southern Miss Softball in Midweek Game

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Southern Miss softball lost to UNC Greensboro 8-1 Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans took an early lead with a grand slam in the second inning and held on to win the first-ever matchup between the programs, according to sources.

Southern Miss, which entered the game with a 20-12 record, was limited to four hits. Hannah Christian led the Golden Eagles with two hits and a stolen base, while Madilyn Graham took the loss, bringing her season record to 5-4. The Spartans’ Brooklyn Shroyer earned the win, improving to 10-4.

The game quickly turned in UNCG’s favor after the second inning. The Spartans scored six runs on a grand slam by Nya South, who finished with five RBIs. Southern Miss responded in the fifth with a solo homer from Christian. Despite some offensive efforts, the Golden Eagles couldn’t close the gap. Hannah Christian and Julia Glasgow each had one hit for the visitors.

UNCG capped off scoring in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly. The Spartans’ pitchers maintained control throughout, with BrookLynn White pitching the final innings. The Golden Eagles will look to rebound in their next game against Appalachian State.

Southern Miss remains ranked in the top 75 nationally in batting average and holds several other top-tier national rankings, including hits and walks, according to team stats. The program is also known for its strong offensive and defensive metrics, including sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies.
