Toney’s Sixth Double-Double Leads Delta State Past Valdosta State

Cleveland, Miss. — Dakiya Toney recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Delta State Lady Statesmen to a 63-49 victory over Valdosta State on Thursday night at Sillers Coliseum.

The Lady Statesmen (14-9, 12-6 Gulf South Conference) trailed after three quarters but outscored the Blazers 26-9 in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. Delta State shot 70% from the field in the fourth quarter and went 11-for-14 at the free-throw line during the stretch.

Jariyah Williamson added 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Kennedee Shelton scored 11 off the bench, including a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. Delta State’s reserves outscored Valdosta State’s bench 31-13. Olivia Allen contributed eight points and three rebounds, and Adyson Roberts added five.

The game was close early, with the teams tied at 13 after the first quarter. Valdosta State held a 25-23 lead at halftime. Delta State found its rhythm in the third quarter, setting the stage for the decisive final period.

The Lady Statesmen shot 44.7% overall and forced 19 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. They also led in points in the paint (28-22) and fast-break points (17-6). Delta State returns to action Saturday against West Florida at 2 p.m. at Sillers Coliseum. The team will participate in Play4Kay to raise breast cancer awareness, and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
