Texas Southern Tops Alcorn in Series Opener, 7-1

HOUSTON — Texas Southern opened its Southwestern Athletic Conference softball series with a 7-1 victory over Alcorn on Friday at Memorial Park. The Tigers scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game, according to sources.

Texas Southern pitcher Zaria Turner threw all seven innings, allowing two hits, one run, and three walks. She struck out five and improved her record to 3-4, the sources said. Alcorn starting pitcher Olivia Miller took the loss, pitching two innings and giving up four hits and three walks. Chiara Olison relieved Miller, pitching three and two-thirds innings and surrendering six hits and five runs.

Alcorn struck first in the top of the first inning. Sanai Salvant led off with a single, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a throwing error by Texas Southern third baseman Dania Durr, giving the Braves a 1-0 lead, according to reports. Texas Southern responded in the bottom of the second, with Kylie Wilson hitting a triple to score Jade McQueen and tie the game at 1-1. Marisa Perla then drove in Wilson with an RBI single, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead that they held onto for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers extended their lead to 3-1 in the third inning. Durr doubled to start the inning, moved to third on a bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Karisma Garcia. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings as Turner and Olison kept their opponents at bay. The game was decided in the sixth, when Texas Southern scored four runs on five hits, including a two-run single by Kylie Wilson and an RBI single by Durr, according to reports.

Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Durr went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Perla was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. For Alcorn, Salvant went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, while Cotten reached base three times with a hit and two walks. The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at noon, according to the schedule.
