Stephen F. Austin Tops Mississippi Valley State in Series Opener
NAUGDOCHES, Texas — Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team opened the season with a 14-5 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at Pilgrim’s Park. The Lumberjacks improved to 3-0, while the Delta Devils fell to 0-3.
Mississippi Valley State managed nine hits, with nearly half going for extra bases. Four different players recorded doubles, but it was not enough to overcome Stephen F. Austin’s offensive surge. The Lumberjacks lead the series 4-1 since 2006 and have won four straight games against the Delta Devils.
Chris Soeder led Mississippi Valley State, going 1-for-3 with a double, a single, and a hit-by-pitch. He scored twice and drove in a run. Eric Williams extended his multi-hit streak to three games, going 2-for-4 with a double and scoring a run. Noah Bufford and Stephen Landaz both contributed RBIs with sacrifice flies, and Landaz added a double. Israel Ramos also doubled, while Tanner Aoki and Gabe Huelsing each recorded singles and scored.
The teams will face off again Sunday at 1 p.m., with Mississippi Valley State aiming to salvage the series. Fans can follow the team on Twitter and Instagram at @ValleyStateBSB and @ValleyStateAthletics.
