Scores from last Night: Walnut and Kossuth sweep playoff tests; Wayne County beats Stone

Walnut, Kossuth and New Albany each swept a girls varsity volleyball playoff opponent Thursday, October 8, 2026, while Germantown worked through a split of the opening sets to beat DeSoto Central. Girls volleyball: Walnut and Kossuth win local playoff matchups

Walnut beat visiting Myrtle 3-0 to reach 31-4, leaving the Hawks at 22-8. The Wildcats’ next listed opponent is East Union, which MaxPreps reports at 36-0. That gives Walnut a demanding follow-up to Thursday’s sweep: its next postseason test comes against an opponent with an unbeaten reported record.

Kossuth also settled its playoff matchup in straight sets, defeating visiting Alcorn Central 3-0. The Aggies came out of the match at 29-4, while the Golden Bears stood at 12-20.

New Albany won 3-0 at Ripley, lifting the Bulldogs to 31-9 and leaving the Tigers at 17-16. MaxPreps lists Mooreville as New Albany’s next opponent on Monday, October 12.

Ingomar completed another home sweep, beating Pine Grove 3-0. The Falcons finished the match at 24-7; the Panthers finished at 23-12.

Girls volleyball: Center Hill sweeps, Germantown wins in four

Center Hill defeated visiting Saltillo 3-0 in their playoff match. The Mustangs’ postgame record was 16-11, with Saltillo at 11-13.

Germantown had a longer finish against DeSoto Central. The Mavericks took the opening set 25-22, but the Jaguars answered with a 25-22 second set. Germantown then won 25-21 and 25-18 to secure the 3-1 playoff victory at home. The result left the Mavericks at 28-8 and DeSoto Central at 18-18.

Boys football: Wayne County separates from Stone

Wayne County beat visiting Stone 47-28 in a conference game in Waynesboro. The decisive scoring stretch came in the third quarter, when the War Eagles scored 21 points and the Tomcats scored none. Stone scored 14 in the fourth, but Wayne County finished with the victory. The reported postgame records were 2-4 for Wayne County and 3-3 for Stone.
