Spalding edges William Woods, 64-62, in SLIAC men’s basketball

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — William Woods University men’s basketball team suffered its third consecutive setback in a road game against Spalding University, losing 64-62 in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.

The Owls, now 10-9 overall and 6-4 in the SLIAC, battled throughout but could not overcome the Golden Eagles, who improved to 12-8 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Neither team led by more than a single digit at any point, with 10 ties and nine lead changes occurring within the first 22 minutes.

Spalding led at halftime, 28-26, and maintained its advantage after an 8-2 run early in the second half. With 18:01 remaining and the game tied at 30, the Golden Eagles pulled ahead for good. William Woods had several opportunities to take the lead but couldn’t capitalize on key possessions.

The Owls shot 20-for-49 from the field, a 40.8% clip that was below their season average of 53.3%. Spalding out-rebounded William Woods 39-25, leading to a 13-6 advantage in second-chance points. Despite the loss, the Owls committed only six turnovers, their season low.

Senior Tray Huguley led all scorers with 22 points, his 17th consecutive game in double figures. He also contributed eight rebounds and made all eight free throws. Tyler Shephard added 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting, including two three-pointers, marking his third straight game with 20 or more points. Shephard also grabbed six rebounds and dished three assists.

Devin McCaine scored eight points, while Trent Walker pulled down six rebounds. The Owls aim to bounce back Thursday at Pohl Gym against Blackburn College in a conference game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
