Southwest Tennis Opens Season with Mixed Results
Southwest Tennis kicked off its season on Jan. 29 with a home match against Bevill State. The men’s team lost 2-7, while the women’s team fell 4-5, according to team sources.
Following their opener, the teams traveled to face Alcorn State. Both squads lost, with the men’s team falling 0-4 and the women’s team losing 4-0.
The team secured its first win of the season during a match against Millsaps College in Jackson. The women’s team defeated Millsaps 4-3, but the men’s team lost 2-5, team officials said.
Women’s tennis continued its winning streak in subsequent matches, beating Mississippi University for Women 7-0. The men’s team, however, lost 1-6 in that match.
Southwest Men’s tennis earned its first home victory on Feb. 10, defeating Hinds 5-4. Luca Cividini contributed a key win over the No. 10 ranked player in the nation in a three-set tiebreaker, according to Head Coach Dean Clower. The match featured seven third-set tiebreakers, Clower said.
“Lots of heart on the courts today! Thomas Simpson won a third-set tiebreaker to clinch the team win,” Clower added.
The team is scheduled to continue its season on Friday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Jackson to face Belhaven University.
