Southwest Mississippi Bears remain undefeated in conference with win over East Central

The Southwest Mississippi Bears improved to 3-0 in conference play after defeating the East Central Warriors 76-56 on the road in Decatur on January 22, according to team sources.

The game was tied at 18 midway through the first half before the Bears took control. They closed the opening period with a 23-3 run, leading 44-23 at halftime. A lob from Brian Foxworth to Leano Rolle for a dunk helped seal the first-half advantage and set the tone for the second half.

Throughout the second half, the Bears maintained their lead, aided by disciplined play that limited fouls. Only one player on Southwest Mississippi exceeded two personal fouls, which prevented free-throw opportunities for the Warriors. A final dunk from Rolle capped the scoring for the Bears, who finished the game strong.

Coach Corey Schmidt credited the team’s resilience and effort. “I thought we got off to just a little bit of a slow start, then Dawson came in for Dre, who got dinged up,” Schmidt said. “He changed the game with offensive rebounds and energy. That got everyone else going, and we just took off from there.”

The Bears had four players reach double figures in scoring. Merrett led with 16 points, followed by Rolle with 14. Robert Flantroy and Courterius Scott each scored 12, with Flantroy hitting three three-pointers. The team looks to improve to 4-0 when they host Mississippi Delta on Monday.
