Southwest Mississippi Baseball splits final away series against Northeast

Southwest Mississippi Baseball traveled to Booneville on Saturday, April 25, for its final away series of the season against Northeast. The Bears lost the opener 14-2 but responded with a 4-3 victory in the second game, according to team reports.

In game one, Luke Simmons started on the mound for Southwest and took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. Camp Segrest pitched 1.2 innings with three strikeouts, while Will McLeod and Tate Miller each threw partial innings. The Bears scored their first run in the opening inning on a ground out by Justin Domiano. JD Hidalgo hit a solo homer in the sixth, the team’s only other run of the game. Five players—Moore, Hidalgo, Domiano, Loper, and Miller—each recorded one hit. Hidalgo’s homer was the highlight, and Moore stole two bases.

The Bears bounced back in game two, securing a 4-3 win. Nik Carney earned his first start of the season and picked up the victory, pitching 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Dom Smith closed the game, pitching the final 1.2 innings and earning the save. Southwest fell behind 2-0 early but rallied with three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a double from Loper, a single from Bolden, and a stolen home by Bolden. The team added a fourth run in the fourth on a single by Moore that scored Bolden. The Bears’ pitching held Northeast to just one run the rest of the game.

Moore led the team with two hits, while Bolden, Loper, and Domiano each contributed one. Bolden and Moore also drove in runs. Loper, Bolden, and Simmons stole bases during the game, according to team stats. Head coach Jack Edmonson credited the team’s resilience, noting that Northeast played well in the first game but the Bears responded with a strong effort in the second.

Southwest improves to 28-22 overall and 12-14 in conference play. The team will host Mississippi Delta on Tuesday, April 28, and can secure a playoff spot with one win, Edmonson said.
