Southern Miss Women’s Tennis Beats Georgia Southern in Close Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s tennis claimed a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday morning at the USM Tennis Complex, winning the doubles point and then holding off a rally from the Eagles in singles play, according to match reports.

The Golden Eagles secured the doubles point by winning on courts one and three. Sakura Sudo and Angelina Blinova defeated Angelina Mihajlovic and Lisen Rinman 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Pimmada Lim and Kamornwan Kornsila won 6-4 at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles match between Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu and Georgia Southern’s Evelyn Warkentin and Mackenzie Leopold was left unfinished at 5-4.

In singles, Georgia Southern quickly responded to even the score. Warkentin beat Blinova 6-3, 6-2 on court one, and Amelie Rosadoro defeated Lim 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5, putting the Eagles ahead 2-1. Xu evened the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Leopold at No. 4. Georgia Southern regained the lead as Mihajlovic beat Kornsila 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

With the match tied at 3-3, Gagana Mohan Kumar secured the victory for Southern Miss by defeating Nanaka Kijima 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. The deciding match came down to court two, where Sakura Sudo topped Heinemann 6-3, 7-6 (7-2 tie-break) to clinch the win for the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss is scheduled to return to action March 14 with a road match at Louisiana, according to team schedules.
