Southern Miss Outfielder Joey Urban Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Mississippi outfielder Joey Urban was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday after guiding the Golden Eagles to a perfect 4-0 record last week, including winning the Round Rock Classic championship.

The senior from Jupiter, Florida, helped extend Southern Miss’s winning streak to six games. He batted .462 (6-for-13) with two runs, a triple, a home run and seven RBIs. Urban drove in at least one run in all four games during the week.

Urban opened the week reaching base in all five plate appearances against Southeastern Louisiana, with two singles and three walks. His ninth-inning single scored the go-ahead run in a 3-1 victory on the road. Although he did not record a hit in the game against Purdue, he drew a walk and contributed a sacrifice fly in a four-run fourth inning that helped Southern Miss secure a 5-4 walk-off win.

Against No. 23 Oregon State, Urban was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. He drove in four runs, including a first-inning solo home run and a sixth-inning triple that sparked a rally. He added a two-run single in the seventh and drew a bases-loaded walk for his final RBI in the contest. His efforts earned him a spot on the Round Rock Classic all-tournament team.

In the final game against Baylor, Urban drove in the first run with a fourth-inning single and drew a walk later in the game. The Golden Eagles (6-1) are scheduled to host Alabama tonight at Pete Taylor Park at 6 p.m., with the game available on ESPN+ and the Southern Miss Sports Network.
