Southern Miss Men’s Basketball Prepares for Road Game at Marshall
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss men’s basketball team is set to face Marshall on Wednesday in Huntington, West Virginia. The Golden Eagles, coming off a 73-65 victory over James Madison last Saturday, will make a quick trip before returning home for the MAC-SBC Challenge.
The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. Central Time inside the Cam Henderson Center, which has a capacity of 9,048. Fans can watch on ESPN+ or listen to John Cox on the Southern Miss Radio Network, the Game Day App, or local affiliates. The broadcast team includes Mark Martin (play-by-play), Stevie Browning (color), and Ben Westfall (sideline).
Southern Miss improved to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in Sun Belt play with their win over James Madison. Tylik Weeks scored 28 points, marking his 10th game with 20 or more points this season. Dalyn Brandon contributed with eight points, three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal in his second start of the year.
The Golden Eagles have limited turnovers this season, recording a season-low seven in their Jan. 24 game at Coastal Carolina. They also began Sun Belt road play with two wins, their best start in league away games in over a decade. Weeks leads the team with an average of 17.8 points per game and was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after a standout performance at the Pensacola Invitational.
Marshall enters the game with a 14-8 record overall and 6-4 in conference, holding a 10-2 home record and winning seven of its last eight home games. The Herd defeated Arkansas State 70-61 on Saturday, with Wilson Dubinsky scoring a team-high 23 points. Jalen Speer leads Marshall in scoring at 14.3 points per game.
Marshall’s notable players include Wyatt Fricks (14.1 PPG) and Noah Otshudi (14.0 PPG). Seven-foot-four center Matt Van Komen averages 7.8 rebounds per game and has pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds four times this season. The Herd also leads the Sun Belt in several categories, including assist/turnover ratio and three-point shooting percentage.
This will be the 30th meeting between the former CUSA rivals. Last season, Southern Miss won 68-66 in Hattiesburg to open Sun Belt play. Marshall has won the last nine matchups in Huntington, with the last four by double digits.
Southern Miss is known for its free-throw shooting, making at least 20 free throws in seven games this season. The team’s season-high of 27 free throws came during a win at Radford. The Golden Eagles are 42-11 at home since the start of the 2022-23 season and are undefeated in home openers under coach Jay Ladner.
On February 4, Southern Miss holds a 12-13 record historically in the date’s games, with their first contest in 1948. The team’s oldest player, Curt Lewis, was born on May 19, 1999. The upcoming game is part of a loaded non-conference schedule that included notable road trips and home games against regional opponents.
