Southern Miss Football Debuts Future Legend Brett Favre 50 Years Ago

Hattiesburg, Miss. — Fifty years ago, a future NFL Hall of Famer stepped onto the field at M.M. Roberts Stadium for his college debut. Brett Favre, then a true freshman, entered the game against Tulane with less than six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Southern Mississippi was trailing 16-10 when Favre was inserted into the game. He led the Golden Eagles on three scoring drives down the stretch, completing 6 of 10 passes for 85 yards and two touchdowns, according to reports.

Favre recalled postgame that he was initially frightened to play but quickly found his rhythm. Coach Jim Carmody called the game one of the best in stadium history, praising the effort of both teams.

The game featured impactful plays, including an interception by freshman Kerry Valrie, setting up Favre’s first touchdown pass to Chris McGee. The Golden Eagles’ final score came on a 17-yard run by Eddie Ray Jackson, giving them a 31-24 victory over Tulane.

Gandy led all rushers with 167 yards on 36 carries, scoring two touchdowns. The game remains notable for Favre’s memorable debut, which marked the beginning of a legendary football career.
