Southern Miss Dominates Alcorn State, 49-3

Southern Mississippi defeated Alcorn State 49-3 Saturday night at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Golden Eagles extended their winning streak with a dominant performance that kept the Braves scoreless after the first quarter.

Alcorn State struck first, capitalizing on an early interception by Elijah Ruffin that set up a field goal. Kenyon Bowyer’s 22-yard kick put the Braves ahead 3-0 with 5:52 remaining in the opening quarter. Southern Miss responded quickly, with Steven Robinson scoring on a two-yard run to give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead.

Southern Miss pulled away in the second quarter. Quarterback Ethan Hampton connected with Mario Sanders for a 38-yard touchdown, boosting the lead to 14-3. The Golden Eagles added a late first-half touchdown on a 97-yard drive, with Jamarice Wilder scoring from two yards out just before halftime for a 21-3 advantage.

After the break, Southern Miss scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, including Robinson’s third rushing score and Wilder’s 29-yard run. The Eagles’ lead grew to 42-3 entering the final period. Robert Henderson capped the scoring with a one-yard run in the fourth quarter, making it 49-3.

Alcorn State’s offense finished with 223 total yards, including 119 passing and 104 rushing. Jaylon Tolbert completed 15 of 22 passes for 119 yards. The Braves’ defense was led by Timothy Jasper, who recorded 13 tackles, and Elijah Ruffin, with eight tackles and an interception return. Alcorn finished with five turnovers and was penalized seven times for 69 yards.

Southern Miss, now 2-0, amassed 543 yards of total offense, with 317 rushing and 226 passing. The Golden Eagles held possession for more than 31 minutes and converted 11 first downs. They will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff next Saturday in Memphis at the Southern Heritage Classic.
