Southern Downs Mississippi Valley State Women’s Basketball 69-46
The Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team fell to Southern 69-46 Thursday afternoon at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Devilettes, with a 4-14 record overall and a 3-4 mark in SWAC play, faced a Southern team that improved to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in conference.
Since 2005, Southern leads the series 35-6, including a 23-game winning streak. The last time the Devilettes defeated the Jaguars was Feb. 11, 2013, when they won 61-57.
Despite limited playing time, Sydney Thompson led Mississippi Valley State with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting and added four rebounds. Desiree Smith scored eight points, led the team with six rebounds, and contributed a steal and an assist. Jakyrra Sandifer recorded her first career multi-steal game with two steals. Sydnei Marshall added six points and blocked a shot, while Nairobi Lewis scored five points from the free-throw line.
The Devilettes’ next game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Their Saturday matchup at Grambling State was postponed to Feb. 23 due to winter weather. Fans can follow the team on social media at @MvsuWBB and @ValleyStateWBB.
