Southern Beats Alcorn Men’s Tennis in SWAC Pod Match
Montgomery, Ala. — Southern University edged Alcorn State 4-2 in men’s tennis Saturday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. The match was part of a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pod event hosted by Alabama State.
Southern took an early lead in doubles play, winning two of three matches. Sebastien Byng and Zachery Byng defeated Vicent Llobell Buigues and Matthew Holl 6-3 at the top spot. Mpho Leshoele and Jaime Sigauque then secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory over Tomas Grime and Jorge Prats Navarrete.
Alcorn’s duo of Sebastian Griffiths and Fabian Juarez earned a 6-2 win over Lwazi Ngwenya and Gabriel Inyang on court two. In singles, Alcorn won two of five completed matches but could not match Southern’s overall performance. Griffiths defeated Ngwenya 6-2, 6-4, and Buigues beat Inyang 6-0, 6-1.
Southern responded with three singles wins. Sebastien Byng rolled past Holl 6-1, 6-2, while Leshoele defeated Grime 6-1, 6-3. Zachery Byng secured the clinching victory, rallying past Navarrete 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The sixth match between Juarez and Sigauque was unfinished at 6-3, 3-6, 4-4 after the team result was decided.
